Stand up for your rice!

The saying "you are what you eat" can never be more true about rice. Rice, the staple diet of half the world's population, is not just food. It's an integral part of our life and culture. The Philippines is a center of origin and biodiversity of rice, and rice is the Filipino's most important food. Rice figures in the mythology of our ancestors, and in Filipino alone we have dozens of words for rice. Everyday, we Filipinos eat an average of 308 grams of rice. (That's a little more than 2 sacks of rice a year!)

But our rice under threat. Genetically-modified rice (link to the page on GMOs) is already in our shores. And if we care about what we eat, we have to stop the further entry of GMOs in our food chain.

It's time for us to stand up for our rice and keep it GMO-free.(link to action center)

(You can read about the whole story of GMO rice in our shores here.)

Why blog? Why not? Each of us has a story to tell about the one food we've been eating day in, day out, 24/7, 365 days a year, all the years of our lives. That's millions and millions of stories about how important rice is to us.

That's also millions and millions of reasons why we should keep rice farming sustainable and safe for the environment and human health.

These stories should be heard . And this blog can provide a venue. Send us a blog entry about rice and anything else under the sun. Email us at greenpeacephilippines@gmail.com and we'll be happy to post your thoughts.

"It may seem as though food and its future are completely out of your hands. That isn't so....If we are what we eat, we need to do everything we can to protect our precious food resources."

Including blogging.
